An easy, but fascinating and varied walk, rich in wildlife and steeped in history.
5.2 miles. Easy.
Starting from the imposing Gatehouse of Lancaster Castle, you will soon escape the bustle of the city centre to follow a varied route along canal towpaths and the wild banks of the Lune Estuary, a waterway once alive with ships carrying rum, cotton sugar and slaves to St. George’s Quay. When you reach the Quay, a visit to the Maritime Museum will bring this exciting period of Lancaster’s history back to life (free entry for locals) and you can even relax with a cuppa in the café before embarking on the short climb back to the Castle via the Roman Bath House and the splendid Priory Church.
